Baby Love: 32 Weeks - Bare Belly Comparison #2

I apologize in advance if I offend anyone with my bare belly comparison below. I seriously debated whether to post the pics, but in the end thought it would be fun. On the left I am 32 weeks pregnant with Declan. On the right I am 32 weeks pregnant with Baby H. My weight is still averaging about 6-7 lbs less than I was with Declan at this time. Mainly because the food situation has been on and off for me during this pregnancy. I also think that the position of the Baby this time around is definitely lower. I think my tan belly in the picture with Dec is left over from our Baby-moon in Hawaii.
Pregnancy Highlights:
How Far Along: 32 weeks
Size of Baby: She weighs 3.75 lbs and is about 16.7 inches long.
Total Weight Gain: 20 lbs
Maternity Clothes: So excited about the two bags of clothes Krissy gave me!
Gender: Sugar and spice and everything nice!
Movement:
It's probably just wishful thinking, but I feel like her kicks are more at the top of my stomach, rather than the bottom.
Sleep: Ugh!
Food Cravings: Not a lot - some days food is my friend, others food is my enemy.
What I Miss: I LOVE reading with Declan before nap time and bed time. Unfortunately we are both finding it difficult to cozy up for story time with my big belly.
Symptoms: Braxton Hicks- big time!
Memorable Moments: I loved having Mimi in town this week - especially shopping with her and showing her the nursery. We really worked on it together and it was fun showing her the finished product (post on this to come soon). I love my prenatal yoga class for so many reasons and can't wait to go again this week. And, last (but certainly not least) yesterday I loved my lunch celebrating Baby H with my friends! (Post on this to come).
What I Am Looking Forward To: This afternoon is our second attempt at getting some good 4D pics and a video. Here's hoping she is camera ready!

23 Months

My sweet - it is hard to describe in words exactly how awesome this last month has been. Everyday I see you growing up in what others would deem subtle ways, but to me they are glaringly apparent. It seems 24 hours doesn't go by without you doing something to simply amaze (or amuse) me! Like tonight for instance, you wanted to play with your cars in the family room so you picked up your big, heavy car case (about half the size of you) and walked it into the room. You could barely hold it, but you were determined. I was taken back by your initiative and determination. Also, it is hard to quantify your constant efforts of communication, but your dad and I are enjoying the jibber-jabber so much! Quite honestly we have no idea what you are saying most of the time, but it is so fun listening to you - we don't really care. You always seem to have a look on your face that tells us what you are saying is important!
As you approach the two year mark and I watch your personality unfold, I cannot help but think that you truly reflect the meaning of your name, "full of goodness". There really is no better way to describe you. We love and adore you so much!

What you love:
  • Buses
  • Bell peppers
  • Watching airplane videos on you tube. Although we recently had to stop this altogether in fear that you would break our computer. :(
  • Airplanes in general - Mimi just bought you an airplane book and it is all that you want to read!
  • Girls, girls, girls - you have become such a skirt chaser! Every time we are at the YMCA you befriend a girl by giving her a hug!
  • Your big boy room and everything in it! You especially love playing hide and seek in your closet.
  • Giving kisses - you are so affectionate!
Growing Up:
  •  This month we crossed a pretty big milestone - the transition to your big boy bed! This will always be a great memory for me. Not only was it easy, it was so enjoyable. I guess you were more ready than I realized to make the move. Your napping better than you ever have, sleeping great, and generally just enjoy going to bed. I still can't believe it!
  • Your first dentist appointment
  • I've noticed you associating more. For example, if we are reading your airplane book and you are wearing your airplane PJ's you will point to the airplanes on your PJs.
  • This month you discovered how to make the kissing sound when giving a kiss. Now you absolutely LOVE giving kisses and making that sound. The other night I said "It's time to say good night to your airplane book," and you kissed it! So darn cute!
  • You are taking more initiative. If you see that Daddy or I are holding your PJs, you promptly sit in front of us knowing that it is time to change.
  • You spent your first night away from the house without us. You had a great time at your cousin Zack and Emma's house!
  • Last night (kind of impromptu)  we took down your high chair and started using your booster seat. So far so good. We'll see!
  • You are getting much better at helping me clean up your toys. You put all of your toys away in the bath before you stand up and say "up" (meaning your ready to get out), and you usually help me put your cars away at night before bed time.
Favorite Moment: Without a doubt my favorite moment this month was the morning after we set up your bunk bed. I brought you into your room to show you and you were beside yourself with excitement. I immediately hung some old sheets from the top bunk to make a fort. It was such a fun morning - I just loved watching you explore your new domain. Especially knowing the bed meant something bigger than simply a new play area. To me it represented the beginning of toddler-hood!
Also, this cannot be pinned down to one moment, but your discovery of making the kissing sound in the last couple of weeks has lent to so many heart melting moments for me. You have always been affectionate, but the kisses - there are not words to describe how adorable I find them! I love when you wave, say "bye", and then blow a kiss - complete with the kiss noise. It is so darn cute!

Here's to a great 24th month!

"A Bus!" - Video

Some people play slug-bug. We play "a bus!"

As you can see, Dec is very excited about buses these days!

Conspiracy Theory - Video

I think it began sometime late last summer. Declan's protest to errands that is:

For the longest time I used to tease Adam, saying that he and Dec were conspiring against me to spend less money. I have friends who say they can't get out of Target without spending $100. I wish I had enough time in Target to spend $50! Declan does everything in his power to get me out of the store (any store) as quickly as possible.
Below is a video of us entering Michaels where he is just starting with his fit. This really doesn't show the worst of it. Within 10 minutes he is trying to climb out of the cart (obviously I can't video this). My only hope for buying a little more time is the slow distribution of peanut M&M's. (Don't judge!)

A few weeks ago Adam decided to take Dec to Costco on a Saturday. When he said he was going to do this, I couldn't help but laugh to myself. A half an hour later the boys returned without any groceries. Adam said to me, "I have no idea how you do it! We had to leave!" I guess it wasn't a conspiracy theory after all!
Even though it can be challenging and it definitely isn't pretty, eventually Dec and I make it through our weekly errands. Sometimes we even have a little bit of fun!
My only question is: How in the world will I manage with two???

Baby Love: 31 Weeks

Pregnancy Highlights:
How Far Along: 31 weeks
Size of Baby: She measures over 16 inches long and weighs about 3.3 pounds (try carrying four navel oranges) and is heading into a growth spurt.
Total Weight Gain: 19 lbs - as I like to say to Adam, I'm gettin' my fat on!
Maternity Clothes: I am ecstatic because my sister-in-law Krissy is passing down her maternity clothes - I may avoid a trip to target altogether - yeah!!
Movement:
Now that I know she is breech, I am extremely aware of her kicks - all in the lower part of my stomach. I can just picture her little feet in there. Also, at one point this week I had the feeling I was on a roller coaster from some movement she did.
Sleep: Actually, really good this week! Go figure.
Food Cravings: You will always find strawberries in our fridge!
What I Miss: The ease of simple things - getting up from a chair or the floor (from playing with Declan), rolling over in bed, and shaving.
Symptoms: I started getting sick again earlier this week (ugh!). But, it has subsided quite a bit so I'm thinking maybe I caught a bug or something? Although, I'm noticing I have to be careful of what I eat or I start feeling a tiny bit queasy afterward. Can't figure it out.
Memorable Moments: In order of occurrence:
  • Finding out my very good friend Jaimie is having a GIRL!! We are such big dorks - already planning matching outfits for the little darlings. How lucky am I to have such an awesome friend to share pregnancy/motherhood with twice!
  • Seeing Baby H at our 4D ultrasound (even though she was a bit camera shy).
  • Transitioning Declan into his Big Boy bed really made my week. :) I am so proud of him!
  • During my pregnancy with Declan I took this awesome prenatal yoga class with my friend Michelle. I was going to start it again in March, but after finding out she was breech, I decided a little downward dog might help in turning her, so I started on Wednesday night. The stretching felt so good! Can't wait for next week...I may even take a few pics to share!
  • Celebrating 5 wonderful years with Adam ended a great week! Side note on this: one of the reasons we decided to get married in February is because we wanted to celebrate our anniversaries by going snowboarding (once upon a time, we were a little bit cool). We always said for our 5th anniversary we would go big, like Whistler. Ha, ha! Instead, our big night consisted of Declan sleeping over at his cousins (thanks aunt Jen!) so we could go out to dinner and sleep in. Quite honestly, it was glorious in every way. Although I miss snowboarding, there is no place I'd rather be in my life than the mother of a happy (almost 2 year old) boy with a little sweetie on the way. Here's a picture of the dessert our waiter comped us. The perfect end to a perfect evening!

What I Am Looking Forward To: In order of occurrence:
  •  A doctor's appointment this morning
  • Followed by "a baby day" with Jaimie and the boys. We will be doing all fun things that have to do with baby - Babies R Us, baby girl shopping, checking out the new BOB model (is it really worth the extra dough?), etc, etc!
  • My mom is coming to town this week!!
  • A lunch with close friends to celebrate Baby H this Sunday - can't wait!
  • Bloomers - can't wait to see her little tush in these sweet things!

Ladies Man

Originally I was going to name this post "Friendly Fun," but as I was writing it I noticed a reoccurring theme - Declan is quite the ladies man (or at least attempting to be!). Anyway, Declan and I had a great week with our friends!

Last Friday we crashed a music class with Isla. Unfortunately the music teacher understandably made me put my camera away before I was able to get a picture of the two friends. I did however, manage to snap a few of Dec & Raleigh. Declan met Raleigh at music class and they became fast friends. Declan was quite intrigued by the ruffles on her skirt. I can already tell this boy will be girl crazy. Ugh!
On Saturday we met up with the cousins at the Parade of Flight on Coronado Island. I wish I could say it was an awesome day, but unbelievable traffic getting in and out really put a damper on our day. Let's just say we were in the car much longer than we were at the event. Never good. Oh well, we did get to see some airplanes!
On Sunday we met our good friends Lola and Ellie at the Botanical Gardens for some outdoor fun! What a beautiful day it was. Declan attempted to hold Lola's hand, but she was busy with the fish pond. Declan will soon learn - it's all about timing with the ladies!
On Tuesday we met Micah, Amelia, Lily, and Ella (only one week old!) at the YMCA. Declan was not in the best of moods this day, but Amelia managed to crack a smile on his face - especially when she gave him a kiss!!You better believe the observing mom squad was ooing and aahing!
An attempted picture of the 5 tumblers didn't really work out so well:
On Thursday we headed back to the Y for a play date with Cassidy.
I think that Declan is destined to grow up like his father - surrounded by women! Most of his little friends are girls, and out of 7 cousins, 5 are girls! The good thing is, he'll always know how to treat a lady!

The Icing on My Cake...

...and you know how I LOVE cake!
This blog is 99% about the kid (soon to be kids!). But today I'm going to give a shout out to my husband because it is our 5th year anniversary! There are so many wonderful things I could say about him, but simply put, he is the reason for my every happiness.

It is a nice feeling to know I picked a good one to be in the fox hole with! Happy anniversary, Love!

The Big Boy Transition!!

Disclaimer - this is long and full of details. Probably totally boring to those other than me, grandparents, and moms looking to transfer their kiddos!
Inspired by the recent successes of Kyndal, Stacie, and a few other mom friends transitioning their kiddos before age 2, Adam and I decided to take the plunge! Our main motivation in this decision was simply financial - I did not want to put money into another crib when I would have transitioned Declan in 6 months anyway. So, as you know over the last several months we have been working diligently to find new spaces for our office in order to create a super cool Big Boy room for Declan! And, let me tell you it is super cool! The room is 95% compete. I am just waiting for a few back-ordered items. As soon as they arrive I will post pictures - I can't wait. But, for now I'm going to share our transition adventure:

Saturday, February 12th - We picked up the side net from Krissy and Mike this afternoon - the final piece we needed to make the transition. All systems are a go! This is the week. I don't have a lot scheduled - just in case we are tired, and my mom comes next week so I am hoping to be on a smooth schedule by the time she arrives. Tonight after Declan's bath we played in his new room for awhile (we have been doing this for about a month). But, instead of moving into his nursery to read books, up onto his new bed we climbed. Supported by his bed buddies (Mookie, fish, and monkey) we read, said our prayers, and sang our songs. Then Daddy left, turned out the light and mommy stayed a little while longer to make sure our little guy felt safe. Declan hung onto me for dear life. He would not let go. When I tried to leave, he said "up, up". So being the softy I am, "up" he went - straight into his crib! I was a total chicken. First night - a big, fat, failure!

Sunday, February 13th - Knowing I would need something to help me not chicken out tonight, I hung Baby H's mobile above the crib this afternoon. Declan can reach it, and I don't want to risk him breaking it, so no turning back for mommy! Tonight we repeated Dec's bedtime routine, just like the night before. Only he did not seem as timid. After Daddy left I stayed in awhile longer (this is really more for my benefit than for Declan's!). Upon me leaving his room, he started to cry, but he did not say "up". At 8:05 I sat down on our couch and was pleased to hear his cry was more of a whine than a true cry. By 8:15 it was quiet! Adam and I looked at one another, but didn't say anything (not wanting to jinx it). 5 minutes later...still quiet! The kiddo was asleep! And he slept until 6:29 the next morning! SUCCESS!!! (6:30-7:00am is a typical wake up time for him). I have to be honest, I woke up 5 times during the night in anticipation of him waking up. Yes, this transition is definitely hardest on me. Here's a picture of my big boy waking up in his new room for the first time. A little confused, but well rested!
Monday, February 14th (nap time) - I knew this would be the hardest. It has always been our most challenging aspect of sleep. Bedtime has always been pretty easy, nap time - not so much. Upon the advice of Stacie I did my best to wear Dec out this morning. He went to day care at the gym, the grocery store, played with the train table at Toys R Us, we went to Legoland and the Aquarium. (I was exhausted!) He fell asleep in the car about 5 minutes from our house on the way home. I had his room all ready before we left in the morning - curtains drawn, bed buddies in position, and the humidifier (we use this during the day because of street noise). At 1:30 I transitioned him from the car, laid him down, and as I walked out the door he stood up and started crying - hard! Ugh! My only hope for today was that he didn't climb off his bed and open the door. Because he can do both. I was prepared to let him cry up there for an hour. I know it sounds terrible, but I have played this game with him before and he is nothing less than tenacious. He cried hard until 2:00. Then it slowly started tapering...I hope, I hope, I hope! 2:13 - officially asleep! What!!? I honestly did not expect this! At 4:04pm he woke up. Oops, no pic!

Monday, February 14th (bed time) -After the bed time routine, he whined for less than a minute and was asleep by 7:45. He slept until 6:46am! Here he is in the morning - still looking a little confused. ;)

Tuesday, February 15th (nap time) - we had a tough morning! Declan was cranky all morning. :( I don't know if it is because of the transition? Teeth? Just not feeling it today? Who knows. After a visit from Ms Kim this morning and a play date at the YMCA with Micah, Amelia, Lily, and Ella, I put Declan down for his nap at 1:10. This was a teeny bit earlier than usual because we had to leave  at 2:30 for our 4D ultrasound. Unfortunately at 1:45 I caved. Mainly because he was still crying and we had to leave in 45 minutes. I didn't want him to fall asleep, just to wake him in 30 minutes. So, nap time today = FAILURE! Here is a picture of his "I should be taking a nap right now" face.
Tuesday, February 15th (bed time) - If nap time goes well tomorrow, I think I am going to have to say we are officially transitioned! Tonight he arranged Mookie, Fish, and Monkey himself. He handed me his books and when we finished with You Are My I Love You (always the last book of the night), he laid down on his blanket and didn't make a peep as I gave him a kiss and walked out the door! Sleep time: 7:39pm-6:20am! What a good boy!

Wednesday, February 16th (nap time) - Well people, we are officially transitioned! It is 1:45 and I am sitting here writing this as Declan naps peacefully. An after nap picture will complete this post! We had a busy morning, day care at the gym, a few errands, story time at Barnes and Noble, and then home to make cookies (always more challenging to come up with rainy day activities)!

After lunch we played in his room for awhile, and at 1:30 he went to his bed and said "up". Well, up he went! After reading one book, I was walking out the door as he waved "bye"! After the door shut he cried for less than 5 minutes. Voila! Transition complete!! Nap Time: 1:40-3:40. Here is his final wake up pic:

I have to say that the transition went surprisingly well. I'm sure that part of the success is due to the fact that he is young and doesn't think to get out of his bed. Even though he climbs in and out of it during play time, he doesn't connect this option during sleep time. I'm sure eventually he will try getting out of his bed and we may run into some challenges in the future. But for now, I'm just counting my blessings.
I fully admit that I had the hardest time with the transition. Just like all milestones, I am conflicted: bursting with pride, yet unbelievably sad at the loss of my baby. I know I've said it a million times, but it is such a bummer how fast this time goes. Congratulations on a successful transition, my big boy!

Breech Baby

This afternoon was our 4D ultrasound! Unfortunately I don't have anything to share - not a picture, not a video. That is because our little one is breech and folded in half. We didn't get one good face shot - her hands and legs were covering her little face the entire time (a common occurrence with breech babies). At my 20 week ultrasound the technician told me she was breech. I have to say I was a little bummed to see that that is still the case - turn baby, turn! The good news is, we get another 4D ultrasound in 2 weeks! Yeah! I get to see my little love again. And, this just happens to be when my mom is in town. I am very excited about the timing of this. When we had Dec's 4D my dad, Carie, and Adam's parents came. So, I am super excited to share the experience with Mimi. I know she will love every minute of it. Hopefully we will have better luck next time! I will post the minute I have the goods. ;)

And, just because every post needs a pic - here are the Herkert boys waiting for the show to begin this afternoon.
PS - does anyone know some tricks to turn a breech baby? If so, please do share!

Sweet Child of Mine

I just wanted to wish you a Happy Valentine's Day!
It was exactly one year ago today that I posted my favorite post of all time: you learning to walk at Trader Joe's! It absolutely melted my heart. For a month I found every excuse to visit Trader Joe's just so you could push the cart around! Love you bug!

Baby Love: 30 Weeks

Pregnancy Highlights:
How Far Along: 30 weeks - depending which hour of the day you ask me, I might answer "10 short weeks!" or I might answer "10 long weeks!" I cannot believe I am down to the final 10. My to-do list feels like it is expanding, not shrinking!
Size of Baby: She is about 15.7 inches long now, and she weighs almost 3 pounds (like a head of cabbage)
Total Weight Gain: 18 lbs
Maternity Clothes: Aaah - the subject of clothing. Basically I am scrounging my closet right now - squeezing into whatever I can.  Next week my mom comes and I plan on taking a trip to Target to buy some comfy items!
Gender: A little sister for Declan ;)
Movement:
She's rockin' and rollin' in there. Lately I feel more jabs on my right side - I'm very curious about her position! Sometimes I feel a hard lump (her head?) pushing so hard it's like she's trying to escape! Not just yet little one!
Sleep: Hit and miss. Usually I have a really bad night of sleep and then crash from exhaustion the next night.
Food Cravings: One night this week I was lying in bed, (trying to fall asleep) when the chicken salad from Trader Joes popped into my head. I was fixated on it! The next morning I made a quick stop to pick some up for lunch, BUT to my dismay, the refrigerator was broken! They didn't have any! I was devastated and at a total loss as to what to eat for lunch. :( Also, I have a confession to make: On Tuesday I actually waited for our trash man, and at the last minute dumped a dessert I had made for Super Bowl into the trash. Because, quite frankly I didn't trust myself not to pull it out!
What I Miss: My energy and having more outfits to choose from in my closet.
Symptoms: A couple of days this week I noticed a feeling of lethargy. Not tired enough to take a nap, but definitely functioning on less energy. This is such a bummer to me, especially when playing with Declan. Also more cramping - I'm guessing the cramping is Braxton Hicks. I never felt this when I was pregnant with Declan, so I'm not really sure. It is on my list of questions to ask the doc next week.
Memorable Moments: Holding Ella Grace for the first time was definitely the best moment this week. Also, I had a really good week with Declan. It wasn't anything in particular - he's just been in such a good rhythm - sleeping great, napping great, eating well, and just generally so happy. Every night Adam and I talk about how much fun we are having. The kiddo just looks for reasons to laugh. I love parenthood!!
What I Am Looking Forward To: Tomorrow!!! We have a 4D ultrasound scheduled. I cannot wait! We did this with Declan too, only I was 27 weeks so his face was a little hard to make out. Since I am further along this time, we should see a little more. Also, I can't wait to own a DVD of an ultrasound. That way I can pop it in whenever I want and indulge in the beauty of this little being growing inside of me.

Happy Heart Day!

Moments Like These - Video

I apologize in advance for my poor video skills - I'm not very good with a moving target! Anyway, below is a video of Adam and Declan playing. What I did not catch in the video is Declan running to grab his car, stopping midway, turning around to give his Daddy a BIG hug before heading back to retrieve his toy. Melt my heart! I am so lucky that the man I married turned out to be such a good Daddy!
Later that night Adam were talking about the day, and he said "It doesn't get better than this." I have to agree.

Love Bugs

Declan is quite taken with his friend Amelia. Unfortunately the time is closing in when we will have to say good-bye. small tear :( In the meantime, we are scheduling as much time as we can with Katie and Amelia. This week we had a great play date at the New Children's Museum.
Declan enjoyed pushing his princess on the cart:
The two of them were quite pleased with themselves when they figured out how to sit on the back together and push it with their feet.
A little grocery shopping is always a fun date!
And some good old fashioned bounce house fun!
Dec spent some time in the rain house...
The two loved this room filled with light switches and discovering cause and effect!
My favorite pictures of the day are the hand holding ones!
Dec wanted to show Amelia the trolley that passes by the museum ;) Big surprise!!
These little love bugs just melt my heart! What a great day!!

Super Bowl + Super Friends = Super Fun!

We hosted a small get together for super bowl last Sunday. The boys have bets going all season, consisting of spreadsheets, emails, money - the works! So, it only fits to end it all with a bang! As you can see in the picture below, we had a house full of Packer fans;) Heath (the one standing up) being a native Wisconsinite had the most interest vested in the game! Congrats Heath!
Jeremy, Brian, Adam, and Heath - football betting buddies and long time friends!
The kiddos had a great time too. It was basically kiddie chaos the whole afternoon - my favorite!
Here is a picture of Luke, the youngest member, just over 9 months and happy as can be!
And Isla, just over 16 months making a bumbo out of Dec's stool - very creative!
And miss Cassidy, just a week older than Dec - investigating the train table -
Dec had fun running around playing with the girls...

We tried to get a picture of all four mini's, but in typical Declan fashion, he revolted against the group shot! Seriously, does he not understand the importance of pics to his mother???
And, he's outta there! Here's a cute one of the kiddos minus Declan (little rascal!)
A fun afternoon with great friends! And, the Packers won!

Welcome Ella Grace!

Introducing the newest cousin ;) Isn't she a beauty?
Born at 12:38pm, weighing 8lbs 2oz and measuring 19 inches.
I was lucky enough to be there when they were taking her footprints, so I snapped a quick one of her perfect little piggies!
Showing off her lungs!
