SUNK.

My cell phone. In the toilet.
We have those safety devices on all of our toilets, EXCEPT the powder room (we usually keep the door shut). Unfortunately I forgot and could not get there in time to save my beloved phone. Oh well, I actually really need a new one. But, I'll have to manually enter all of the phone numbers - YIKES! Did I learn my lesson today!

Shoe Obsession - Video

Yes, our little guy has a shoe obsession. About a week after he began walking he started carrying shoes. It doesn't matter who's shoes they are, if Declan sees shoes he picks them up. Big shoes, little people shoes, whatever! I really have to watch him when we are at the beach - he likes to take other people's shoes (oops!). I have to say, all of the shoe carrying taught him to walk with his arms down instead of up (which is how he started out). Once he has the shoes, he likes to find new homes for them. It kind of reminds me of his laundry sorting habit (still going strong by the way!)

The Sweeter, Slower Life - Video

About a month ago I splurged and finally bought an umbrella stroller. I've had my eye on the MacLaren Volo (light weight and great for traveling) since Declan moved into his toddler car seat in December. I just couldn't bring myself to pay the ridiculous amount they charge for a MacLaren. But a sale, a coupon, and store credit helped me take the plunge. Looking forward to running errands quickly again, I was anxious to try out our new ride. Interestingly this was right around the time Declan started walking...do you see where I am going with this? You guessed it! Declan is not exactly into sitting in strollers  for more than about 10 minutes these days. He wants to walk, explore, discover the world! I can't really blame him. And, I do love watching him use his new found freedom - those 2 chubby legs! So, I have come to terms with the fact that getting errands done quickly is something reserved for our future.
Our journey to the mall, where I was planning on going to about 5 stores. Instead we went to 2, got some ice cream, and looked at the pools. Notice the empty stroller? It is good for storing bags :)
Making friends where ever we go!
I love how he tries to climb into the pool - that's my boy!

Busy Bodies

Yes, we had a very busy week last week - full of fun! In addition I have been very busy with work and school at night and have not had time to blog :( It's driving me crazy - so many pictures to post, so little time! Oh well - one post at a time...

As I was saying, we've been having some fun seeing friends that we don't get to see very often. Early in the week we met up with Molly and Mateo at Powerhouse Park in Del Mar. The boys are only one week apart and it was fun sharing birthday party stories and seeing both boys walking now (they were both crawling the last time we got together)!

It is getting more difficult to take pics of Dec. He doesn't like to stop moving - as you can see by the look on his face!
Later in the week we met Katherine Scarlett. My good friend Tracy from High School / College is visiting from Washington with her 2 month old, little Katie. Aaah - to hold a baby again!

We met at Kellogg Park in La Jolla. Again, it is nearly impossble to get a picture of Dec these days! Trying my best to catch a snap shot of both Katie and Dec - this was the best I could do! Isn't she just precious? She has strawberry blond hair and blue eyes - sure to be a heart breaker!

Tracy's sister-in-law Kristy and her daughter Abby were at the park too. Dec and Abby had fun playing together. I just love how they are sitting back to back...extra support for all of the hard work happening in the sand box!
And, today was Miss Gracie Jo's 3rd (I can't believe it!!) birthday party. We headed up to Orange County to help her celebrate.

Are you starting to notice a theme?  Declan is not happy! He just wants to run around, not pose for a picture!
Alex, Gracie, and  disgruntled Dec

Much happier - Declan decided to join the basketball game. Luckily these boys were kind enough to let a little one year old tag along in the game.
Yeah! A jumper!! It's his first time walking in one, not crawling!

Loving the cozy coup :)

13 Months

Little Declan, today is actually May 14th - you are almost 14 months old! But, it has been bothering me for the last 2 weeks that I didn't give you a 13 month shout out. I don't really have a plan or a format yet for how I will recognize your monthly growth (now that we ceased the poems). But, for now here is my love for month number 13!
My favorite moment: Watching that little brain of yours work during the MRI (for the autism study). I couldn't stop staring at the images, completely mesmerized. I can't tell you how many times I have said "I wonder what he is thinking" in the past 13 months. Not that I knew what you were thinking, but it was so cool to see the process my love!
Our Embarrassing Moment: After 12 months of nursing, I am finally weaning you this month! I thought it would be easy, we were down to one, at the most two times per day (morning and night). Well, its like you knew I was weaning you and decided to rebel. During swim lessons you practically ripped my suit off trying to feed yourself. Ugh!
How you make us smile: Well, by just being you of course! This month you started doing some really cute things - like patting our back when we hold you. I know you are imitating us, the way we pat yours when we hold you. The affection melts my heart. I'm so glad you are a snuggle bug! Also, the way you "blow" kisses by patting your ear instead of your mouth. I just love this one! One day we were at the beach and Micah woke up from his nap a little cranky. You went right over to him and started patting his back to make him feel better. Wow! This blew me away.
Walking: Your first 2 steps were on March 20th. I remember I was hesitant to write this on the blog. They were so wobbly, I wasn't sure I could even count them as steps. Boy, am I glad I did! Just over two weeks later (April 6th) you were a walking machine! I felt like it happened over night. I thought it would take you at least a month to become proficient, but you rocked it kiddo!
Sounds: You definitely rely more on gestures for communicating than words. In fact, while you were being tested by the psychologist for the autism study, she said you had more gestures for a one year old than she has ever seen! But, I know you have some words in there too. Its only a matter of time. Your new words this month were "ni" for no (unfortunately you really like this one), "bop" for dad. Sometimes you call him dada too, but lately you love calling him this. Especially when you are looking for him. You walk around the house yelling "bop!" You also started whispering this month. You walk around whispering "ti, ti, ti". I don't think this means anything, you just like making these noises. You're still "motor-boating" and you recently started clicking your tongue.
Miscellaneous: You love water - especially waves at the beach. You have absolutely no fear and just run straight into them. It makes me nervous! Whenever we take you into a pool you start laughing because you are so happy! You love playing with Thomas the Train, and your rocking horse. We started watching Sesame Street this month. Tooth number five came to live in your mouth! Poor thing I watched it for 5 weeks trying to pop through. You have been able to feed yourself with a spoon since you were about 9 months, but this month you decided you are so good at it, you don't need me to do it anymore! It is rare that I feed you anymore. It's all you my little man!

As always my love, you never fail to amaze me. I love and cherish each day we spend together and I love getting to know the little person you are becoming.

Beautiful Butterflies

Success! On a whim, Declan and I stopped by the Monarch Program in Encinitas while out and about today hoping to see some hatched butterflies. We were in luck! We saw lots of beautiful butterflies! Declan loved the butterflies - he desperately wanted to touch and hold them, but we're still working on the meaning of "gentle", so we took the look-don't-touch approach. I did get to hold one and show him though. Very cool!
This little girl was nice enough to hold some butterflies for Declan to look at.

Maybe next year he can hold one...maybe. He almost got his hands on one today - poor little butterfly! Luckily he got away just in time!

Here I am holding an orange with a butterfly on it and one is on my shirt! The one on my shirt is the one Declan almost grabbed.

Ride 'Em Cowboy! -Video

About a month ago Declan received a rocking horse from Poppy & DeeDee for his birthday (I can't believe his first birthday was a month ago!). It wasn't until this past week that he really discovered this toy. I think it is because I was always putting him on it. This week he learned how to climb on and off by himself - and boy was he proud! A couple of nights ago he climbed on it, climbed off it, clapped for himself, and then looked at us in anticipation of our applause. Once he got it, he would fall over laughing. What a ham! I think you will enjoy his show in the video below:

I just love his noise effects in this video. The first one you hear - the clicking sound is something he just figured out how to do today. And the second one, the "aaaaaaaaaaaah" has become a habit in the last couple of weeks. What a crazy kid! Every night, Adam and I love watching The Declan Show!

Small Spaces

Lately Declan is into small spaces. He likes crawling behind the chair in his room, where a cornered wall creates a nice little Declan sized pocket of space. He likes sitting in his Declan chair, and in his tunnel. But today, he found his best hiding space yet!
Jaimie, Casey, and I met at Moonlight Beach to catch up and let the boys run around. All of a sudden Jaimie says, "I think Declan is trying to crawl under the stroller." Those of you that have a BOB know that the one complaint is how small the storage space is underneath. Well, Declan didn't think so! It was just his size!

Head in? Check!
Feet in? Almost...
Mission accomplished - we are in!
What was it that enticed him in? Old cheerios! I guess the fresh ones we had weren't good enough!
Now that you've had a little chuckle, a few candid shots from the rest of our beach day:
Here he is running downhill. He kept taking off toward the water. Super excited, he didn't care that he's not downhill, sand ready. A few steps and then the inevitable spill! These were great falls too - a few rolls and he'd sit up with sand all over his face, look a little disheveled and start all over again. I love it!

Butterfly Befuddle

I'm pretty sure "befuddle" is not a real word, but it seemed appropriate for this blog. I have been excited to visit the Encinitas Monarch Program since the end of February when I happened to stumble on a website that said during the month of April, you could visit the Vivarium and feed watermelon to the newly hatched butterflies! What a cool outing! So on Saturday we met our friends the Klocks, excited to see the flitting creatures. Darn it - they haven't hatched yet! We were informed to come back in a week or two.
Oh well, Dec and Cassidy didn't know the difference. Dec was so excited about the pond in the Vivarium, that was all he cared about. It took him less than two minutes to cake his pant leg in mud, and soak his shoe in an attempt to climb into the pond. Two words: ALL BOY!
This kid was all over the place. Adam is holding is hands to guide him away from the pond. Notice his pant leg...
Time for plan B - the park, followed by some frozen yogurt.
Really Dec, what are you telling your friend Cassidy? It looks important :)

The Stroller Strides Scene - Video

This morning we ventured out to a Stroller Strides promotional event being held at La Costa Resort. Always up for a little outdoor activity, this event was right up our alley. WOW! These people really put on a show! I was expecting a good work out, but it was so much more! After a humbling "stroller stride" (my muscles are already sore!) we hung out and partook in the free food and listened to the live kiddy music.

I think Dec was a little confused by the sea of strollers and crazy moms working out with our resistance bands singing "I'm A Little Teapot"
After our workout, Declan and Micah got to stretch their legs and listen to Hulabaloo sing and play his guitar
"Enough sitting mom - I need to dance! This music is rad!"

When they pulled out the free shakers, that was it for Declan. He was off! Exploring, making friends, and dancing! In the video below, try as I might I could not get in front of him. But, I had to include it in this blog because he just took off! He walked all the way across the field without a second thought. He's definitely not a mama's boy or the least bit shy.

Peanut Butter Anyone? - Video

My brother will appreciate this blog, as we are both allergic to peanut butter. This is NOT a fun thing to be allergic to, especially as a kid. I have been so nervous that this bummer of an allergy would be passed on to Declan. A few weeks ago we had him tested, and it came back negative! Yeah! I have to admit, even though the test was negative, I was still very nervous to give Dec PB. But, we finally tried it and the little guy loves it! Unfortunately, Adam is going to have to take on the role as PB parent. Just from cleaning up the mess in the photo above, my eyes and skin were itchy for over an hour!

I love the way he tosses the celery (usually one of his favorite foods). The Peanut Butter is much more interesting today!

Upright Is Tight - Video

Our life is rapidly changing as Declan grows more confident in his walking ability. He is averaging about 25 steps at a time, and I think I can safely say that he now walks more often than he crawls. With this new stage, comes new hazards. I find myself catching my breath often as he takes some good spills. I guess it comes with the territory. And, I am constantly finding blocks and toys hidden in new, higher areas. I call them little presents. Anyway, the kiddo loves walking! He says "ya, ya, ya" with his hands up in the air. It is so cute! I just love watching him...

And below are a few more pictures from our Oxnard visit to Poppy & DeeDee's.
Poppy and Dec are busy digging a hole for Declan to sit in. They took this job very seriously!

Declan "digs" (excuse the pun) his sand hole!

What a goofy pair!

And a quick visit from GG to drop off a teddy bear for Dec. What a lucky little man!
Of course Uncle Jeff and Aunt Emily stopped by too! Below Dec is watching Monsters Inc with his uncle. There is one part of the movie that always scares him. When it came on, he climbed over to Jeff and sat in his lap. So cute!

Emily, Jeff, DeeDee, and Dec

The kiddo was obsessed with apples this trip. It is how I kept him entertained on the drive up. One apple at a time...

Thanks for a fun trip Poppy & DeeDee!

Beach Bums

Dec and I are enjoying a visit to Poppy and DeeDee's this weekend. Dad is at a bachelor party, so we decided a mini vacation would do us some good. We started the trip out right with a walk down to the beach. Our new red wagon is coming in quite handy these days!
Poppy and Dec playing with some new sand toys
Declan testing out his walking skills - downhill on sand. The kid comes alive with an audience!

The beach bums

A race to the water!

Testing the waters

OK - don't judge me for this next piture. The water came up so fast, catching us all off guard & taking some of us down!

Needless to say, we quickly went home to a warm bath! Happy once again! In the buff, he's at his best :)

Can't wait to see what today will bring.

A Taste of Summer

After an appointment in La Jolla yesterday, Declan and I met our good friends Michelle and Cassidy at the beach for a little fun in the sun! Oh my goodness - what a crazy day! Declan was beside himself with excitement. It was low tide, so the sand was easy to walk on. The kid was everywhere - walking, crawling...whatever he could do to move. He was on a mission to get dirty! And that he did!
Not so dirty...
Working on it...

Goal achieved! A perfect little mess!

I forgot my camera, but Michelle came to the rescue and took these awesome pics! Phew! This was definitely a day worth documenting. Try as we did we could not get the little buglets in a picture together :( They would not sit still. Oh well -soon there will be plenty more beach opportunities for pictures. We can't wait for summer!
